Modem Log for Windows 2000 & XP
Windows 2000 & XP: Control Panel -> Phone & Modems -> Modems Tab
Select your modem, then click
Properties.
Diagnostics tab.You can enable logging by checking the Append to Log Box;
You can View the log by clicking the View Log button.
A portion of a Windows XP Modemlog with Agere SVP Softmodem is shown at right. The Windows drivers (these are not the modem drivers) and versions providing universal modem support are listed first.
The Modem inf path identifies which .inf file Windows will use for your modem. The .inf file defines basic operation (commands and responses) for your modem.
When a call is made, the modemlog shows the modem initialization strings and responses.
Any initialization string you specify is preceded with "Sending user initialization commands." In this example, the echo command, E1, setting is added.
Normally, the modemlog will suppress the phone number being dialed: ATDT########. The echo command adds the modem response - the unmasked number. This can be helpful in situations where you don't get connected to your ISP - you might be dialing the wrong number via improper connectoid settings!
The modem's connect responses are logged and interpreted based upon the .inf file used.
During the connection, multiple Read:... entries will appear.
If you or something on your computer terminates the connection, a TSP(#): Dropping Call entry will appear.
