Zoom suggested init strings

I found this list that Zoom apparently sends to persons making tech support inquires about 56k connectivity problems of init strings to try with Zoom modems. (In ng post -"If anybody wants to try these be my guest. I have better things to do like trying to find a good modem that works when I first install it.")

This list was posted before Zoom switched from Rockwell/Conexant-based modems to Lucent-based modems: these strings are intended for Rockwell/Conexant-based Zoom modems only. An even bigger list is now being circulated by Zoom as they've added strings specific to Lucent modems. [The extra settings controlling protocol and speed limits can be found at 56k=v.Unreliable for most modems.]

Note there are 30 strings, additional comments suggesting further variations, and the last line suggests trying each one of them without the &F. That should keep you busy, and out of Zoom tech support's hair for a while....:

Strings should be typed in all CAPITALS, no spaces, and note that 0 is zero. For the last four speed-forcing strings, in place of the 34000 value, you can try 36000, 38000, 40000, 42000, 44000, 46000, 48000, 50000, 52000, 54000, or 56000. FOR THE K56FLEX STRINGS ONLY: Actually, you can set the present 34000 value to lower speeds (e.g., 300, 2400, 9600, 14400, 28800, 33600) to see what effect it has on connect speed. YET you should not set the V.90 string any lower than 34000 OR ELSE you'll get an "Error". If you make a connection from 34000 to 56000, you ARE making a 56K-range connection. Also try each init string WITH and WITHOUT S202=32 (add to the end of the init string EXCEPT, if +MS command in string, add just BEFORE the + sign). Set your modem speed for 115,200 bps (no higher than this in Windows 95/98 or Windows NT) and NEVER check "Only connect at this speed" -- but you can try even lower port speed settings such as 57600 or even 38400 and 19200 to see what effect it has.

Another tech tested all these strings and found all of them to report the achieved modem-to-modem speed rather than the port speed (all these strings assume you are dialing into a V.90 server; if not, then take the +MS=V90 or +MS=V90,1,28800,33600,36000,56000 commands out of each string OR, if you know that you are dialing into a K56flex server or into a Dualmode K56Flex-V.90 server [NOT a Dualmode X2-V.90 server], then change the V.90 in each +MS=V90 to K56 as in +MS=K56 and leave the rest of the string the same):

Having spent about 15 hours since Friday trying to get my Zoom modem Model 2925 to work, I give up. Had to reinstall win95 several times because my network card and modem card had conflicts. Finally got them both to work. Dialed into isp- disconnected after about one minute. Started adding the strings that tech support sent me last week. After about 30 changes to the strings, the longest I was able to connect was for 5 minutes. I called tech support 2 weeks ago and he said I needed an isa card. He then connectedf me to returns, ext 3010, and she said someone would call me back. Been waiting but no call. I can't return this card as it was bought at Computer City. Compusa tried to help me out but head office said no. I am now stuck with an $80.00 piece of junk There is no excuse for the bvad service and especially the phone call that was not returned. Thanks to all who made suggestions.
